Twilight of Byzantium: Aspects of Cultural and Religious History in the Late Byzantine Empire

Slobodan Curcic and Doula Mouriki, editors (Princeton University Press. 1991)

The political and economic decline of the Byzantine Empire during the 13th through mid-15th centuries was not neatly paralleled by similar cultural decline. This eclectic collection of eleven essays deals with the lives of saints, monasteries, literature, architecture, and art as well as broader cultural and social issues. Accompanying six of the essays are 166 well-printed black and white photographs of architecture and frescoes.
