Solving the Mysteries of the Dead Sea Scrolls: New Light on the Bible
Edward M. Cook (Grand Rapids: Zondervan, 1994) 208 pp., $12.99

This very readable, at times intriguing, introduction to the Dead Sea Scrolls is an excellent choice for the layperson who wants to learn “what all the fuss is about.”
Solving the Mysteries of the DSS is really two short books in one. The first four chapters concern the discovery and subsequent study of these enigmatic writings, while chapters five to eight discuss the analysis and interpretation of the scrolls.
In the first half of the book, Cook combines dramatic description of the shifting political scene in the area with solid, accurate reporting of events. Thanks to Cook’s extensive research, particularly his interviews with “leading players,” even specialists will learn previously unknown details.
