BAR takes a look back at some important events in history that ­happened during the months of July and August.

July 20, 356 B.C. Alexander the Great (pictured below), Greek king and unparalleled military leader, is born in Pella, Macedon.

July 26, 1948 A.D. The Israel Department of Antiquities and Museums (now the Israel Antiquities Authority) is founded.

July 28, 1942 A.D. Sir ­William Matthew Flinders Petrie, renowned Egyptologist and pioneer of modern archaeology, dies in Jerusalem.

August 605 B.C. Nebuchadnezzar II defeats the Egyptians at the Battle of Carchemish. Shortly thereafter his father, Nabopolassar, dies and Nebuchadnezzar returns to Babylon to take the throne.

August 25, 325 A.D. The Council of Nicaea—the first ecumenical council of the Christian church—brings to an end the controversy of Arianism, concluding that God the Son was of equal status with God the Father.

August 28, 476 A.D. The fall of the Western Roman Empire is completed as Emperor Romulus Augustulus is deposed by the German warrior Odoacer.
