September 22–29, 1952 A.D. Roland de Vaux, Jozef Milik and Gerald Lankester Harding excavate Cave 4 in the marl cliffs adjacent to Qumran. Although Bedouin had previously recovered much of its contents, the professional expedition confirmed the locus of the previous Bedouin finds, which had been purchased from them through the antiquities dealer known as Kando. All together Cave 4 produced more than 15,000 scroll fragments.
