Free to BAR Subscribers: 30-Year Survey of Biblical Archaeology

“Biblical Archaeology After 30 Years (1948–1978)” is the title of a lecture delivered by Siegfried H. Horn, Dean Emeritus of Andrews University, at the recent dedication of the Horn Archaeological Museum located on the campus at Berrien Springs, Michigan. Dean Horn discusses the accomplishments of the past 30 years under seven different headings: the fixing of ancient chronologies, new texts bearing on the history of writing, new texts which shed light on Biblical history, the discovery of ancient Biblical manuscripts, the sensational emergence of the Ebla texts (a short treatment presented with “cautious optimism”), the excavation of key Biblical sites, and discoveries with particular bearing on the New Testament.
