A portion of this “cyclopean” wall was noticed by a party of German scholars touring the land in 1903, and this led to the rediscovery of the correct location of Shechem. Most explorers before this period erroneously believed that Shechem was buried beneath the modern city of Neblus. Confusion on this point still abounds because on modern Israeli maps the city of Nablus is called Shechem.
