The best time to swim the Hellespont is late August and early September, when conditions are best. Those who wish to attempt the Straits Marathon should contact the Çanakkale Rotary club (contact Volkan Susluoglu; tel: 90–286-240348; fax: 90–286-2430637; email: [email protected]). The race takes place annually on August 30, but it is necessary to arrive at Çanakkale by the morning of the 29th. The race is free.

If you wish to follow Leander’s route, from Abydos to Sestos, contact Hussein Uluaslan, Troyanzac Tours (Yali Caddesi 2, Çanakkale, Turkey; fax: 90–286-2170196). Or contact Hanifi Araz of Ana-Tur Agency (Anzac House, Cumhuriyet Meydani, No. 61, Çanakkale; tel: 90–286-2171392; fax: 90–286-2172906). A private crossing will cost between $275 and $365 per person; the cost includes the necessary permits needed to enter the military sites at Abydos and Sestos, a swimmer to accompany you, and a boat with radio communication to contact ships traveling the strait at the time of your swim. The more expensive package includes two nights at a first class hotel, a welcoming party and a Turkish bath following your swim.
