The whole November/December 2002 issue contains a wealth of fascinating articles, which reminds me how clever I was in deciding to become a charter subscriber.

Time to See the Light

As an archaeologist, I applaud your stand in “Excavating the Deep: Can the Market Reduce Underwater Looting?” (Hershel Shanks, Editors’ Page, AO 05:05). It is time for the academic community to face facts. As you say, the problem will not go away and it is really only “private enterprise” groups that have the funding to undertake salvage projects. The harsh UNESCO regulations would mean throwing the baby out with the bath water!

The David Roberts lithograph in the November/December 2002 issue is the only one I have ever seen that was drawn while looking in a mirror (see Past Perfect: On Terra Sancta, AO 05:06).
