July 18, 64 A.D. The great fire of Rome starts in the city’s merchant quarter and soon burns out of control, destroying much of the imperial capital. The emperor Nero, who was suspected of causing the fire to create space for a grandiose new capital, accused the city’s Christians of the arson to divert attention from his own actions.
