Call Patterns in Luke 1–2

1. Introductions

· Zechariah and Elizabeth, an aged childless couple (Luke 1:5-7)

· Mary, a virgin in the first stage of Jewish marriage to Joseph (Luke 1:27)

2. Angels bring message

· Angel Gabriel appears to Zechariah in the Temple (Luke 1:10-11, Luke 1:19)

· Angel Gabriel appears to Mary in Nazareth (Luke 1:26-28)

· Zechariah is startled (Luke 1:12)

· Mary is startled (Luke 1:29)

· MESSAGE: Elizabeth will bear a son and name him John (Luke 1:13-17)

· MESSAGE: Mary will conceive and bear a son and name him Jesus (Luke 1:30-33)

· OBJECTION: How can this be? I am old, my wife is old (Luke 1:18)

· OBJECTION: How can this be? I am a virgin (Luke 1:34)

· OVERRULE: God sent me to give you this news (Luke 1:19)
