ReViews: Early Christian Treasures

The Eerdmans Encyclopedia of Early Christian Art and Archaeology (EEECAA) brings a wealth of riches to both scholars and the interested public. General Editor Paul Corby Finney, now Professor Emeritus of Ancient History at the University of Missouri, St. Louis, deserves a vote of thanks for successfully steering this new resource—first proposed in 1966—into the port of publication.

Work on the three-volume encyclopedia has spanned Finney’s career, and more than once it came close to sinking. This accounts for the ominous “death dagger” symbol after quite a few names in the list of the 400-plus contributors and the assurance in the preface that bibliographies for entries written in the earlier years of the enterprise have been updated.
