The notion of the Tablets of the Law being finally deposited in the Ark is clearly spelled out only in Deuteronomy.

Incidentally, the triliteral root of the verb for “inquire” in this sentence is DRS, the first time it appears in the Bible. The same root is to be found in the word Midrash (MDRS). Etymologically, Midrash refers to what we learn from an inquiry.

In the original languages ‘apiru and ‘ivri are both written consonantally. They both begin with a gutteral consonant called ayin. The p of ‘apiru reduces to b (also pronounced v) in Hebrew. This is then followed in both words by r.—Ed.
