This conclusion has been suggested by several Israeli archaeologists as a result of an extensive archaeological survey of the Negev undertaken by the state of Israel.

The “way of Atharim,” from Kadesh-Barnea to Arad, is one of the main routes traversing the Negev. The others are the “way to Shur” leading to Egypt through the Sinai, the “way to the Arava” from Kadesh-Barnea to the Arava valley and the “way to the Reed Sea” along the Arava valley to Eilat.
