Father Michele Piccirillo, a Franciscan of the Custody of the Holy Land and expert in the archaeology of Jordan, especially mosaics, died on October 26, 2008, at age 63 after a brief battle with cancer.

Part of the distinctive charm of Jerusalem’s Old City is the myriad of mighty gates that guard its entrances. Around the nearly 3-mile-long fortified perimeter of the Old City, 11 gates watch over the city’s narrow streets and passageways, although only seven of these are now open.

Strata: Reminder: Prizes for ASOR Papers

The Biblical Archaeology Society is accepting nominations for two prizes of $10,000 each for the best academic papers presented at the 2008 Annual Meeting of the American Schools of Oriental Research (ASOR).

The John Mancini Prize, named for John Mancini of Albuquerque, New Mexico, will be awarded for the best paper on the Archaeology of Early Christianity and the Patristic Period.
