Philistines in the Patriarchal Age

Most of the references to the Philistines in the Bible relate to events between about 1200 B.C. and 950 B.C. This period began with the Israelite settlement in Canaan, when the Philistines too were occupying the area, and continued through the period of King David, who finally suppressed what was for the Israelites the Philistine scourge.

BAR May Get There Yet

To the Editor:

While I usually write in to pick a bone or two (!), this time I just want to congratulate you on your latest issue. It was the first BAR I can remember which lived up to its name by concentrating on discoveries from the field—and demoting crackpots and pedants to Queries & Comments.

Books in Brief

In 1979 Kathleen Kenyon’s revised edition of Archaeology in the Holy Land (W. W. Norton) was posthumously published, and now we have a translation of Yohanan Aharoni’s posthumous survey of Palestinian archaeology (originally published in Hebrew in 1978).
