Although it is impossible to identify the Teacher of Righteousness who led the Essenes at the time of the Wicked Priest, the Wicked Priest was probably Jonathan Maccabeus or Simon Maccabeus. A genizah is a storage place, usually attached to a synagogue, where books and ritual objects bearing the name of God are stored when they become unusable. According to Jewish law such articles may never he destroyed and should be buried in consecrated ground. Thus, the genizahs of ancient synagogues sometimes contained large collections of manuscripts.
