Several sources suggest that the menorah was not melted down but remained a booty of war prized by Vespasian and successive Roman Emperors. The historian Josephus states that Vespasian deposited the menorah in the Peace Temple he erected after the Jewish War (Wars 7:14850). Medieval sources mention the presence of the menorah in Constantinople, although no one is certain whether this was the original menorah or a later copy.
